stretch in paper

what is natural stretch in paper?

Natural stretch properties in paper are very low, arriving at about 1,5%-3% in machine direction (MD) and to 2,5%-8% (highly refined long virgin fiber) in cross direction (CD).

what can be improved?

The Papermorphosis® technology can add up to 40% stretch in MD and up to 8% in CD on top of what a paper naturally has.
Along with increased stretch properties also TEA values, especially in MD, increase drammatically.
The Tensile Energy Absorption describes the work a paper can do before it breaks.

where is stretch in paper needed?

Everywhere when it comes to tearing paper which is resisting before breaking, But even small and customized increases can be added, i. e. improving runnability on converting machines
… or stretch values of highly refined long virgin fiber with less expensive furnish or refining can be simulated, i. e. standard stretch values for sack kraft with LC refining instead of costly HC refining.

wrapping

Wrapping of pallets and goods with paper instead of plastics might be an interesting and sustainable alternative. Industrial trials showed runnability.

3d deformations for packaging

Stretchable paper, differently from moulded pulp, comes from a reel. It can be treated with all traditional converting technologies, such as printing, laminating or coextruding with additional layers, also barrier and/or sealing, according to final product requirements.
Traditional thermoform or forming technologies, normally used for plastics, can be used also for stretchable paper.
Fields of applications range from paper trays to paper plates.

Reproduction of real dishes gets possible as well as single wall isolation cups with paper.
